Scientists in Canada have big hopes on a CBD compound that can treat Coronavirus.
A group of Canadian scientists believes it has found strong strains of a CBD compound found in marijuana that could help treat and then prevent coronavirus infections, according to new studies and interviews.
Scientists from the University of Lethbridge said that a study this April showed at least 13 marijuana plants high in CBD that appeared to affect the ACE2 pathways that the virus uses to enter the human body.
“We were completely shocked at first, and afterward we were very happy,” one of the scientists, Olga Kovalchuk, told CTV News.
The research results which were, printed in the online journal Preprints, indicated cannabis extracts that are high in CBD may help restrict proteins that provide a “doorway” for COVID-19 to enter human host cells.
The researcher’s husband, Igor, suggested marijuana could reduce the virus’s entry points by more than 70 percent. “Therefore, you have a much better chance of fighting the infection,” he told CTV.
“Our current research could have a huge difference — there are very few drugs that have the potential of minimizing an infection by 70 to 80 percent,” he reported to the Calgary Hera
Stressing that more scientific research was required, the research gave hope that if proven to change the enzyme it “may prove a reasonable strategy for reducing disease susceptibility” as well as “become a safe and useful addition to the treatment of COVID-19 as a secondary therapy.”
Marijuana could also be used to “quickly easy-to-use preventative treatments in the form of mouthwash and throat gargle products,” the research suggested, with a “strong potential to decrease viral entry” through the mouth.

The research scientist is seeking funding to continue its efforts to support scientific initiatives to address COVID-19.
“Even though our most effective cannabis extracts require more large-scale studies and validation, our scientifical research study is crucial for the future analysis of the effects of medical marijuana on coronavirus,” the researchers said.
“Given the current rapid and emergency evolving epidemiological landscape, every possible therapeutic avenue and opportunity must be researched and considered.”
